Riverwalk Phase 1 has been a boon to walkers, cyclists and runners. It’s allowed Merrimack Valley residents and tourists to enjoy views of the Merrimack River while they exercise. The one-mile path goes behind UMass Lowell dormitories, behind LeLacheur Park, under the Ouellette Bridge on Aiken Street and behind the Tsongas Center.
It continues behind Boott Mills before a fence abruptly ends the journey. That changed this fall when Riverwalk Phase 2 was completed.
The Concord River Bridge in Massachusetts spans at 150’-0” in length, with the trusses standing at 12’-8” in height. A duplex system of hot-dip galvanizing and wet paint was specified for this project due to the coating durability, corrosion performance, and overall appearance. Early on in the project, Pioneer Bridge decided they wanted to internally vent the bridge truss sections. They worked closely with the galvanizer and reviewed several AGA design documents to make sure the hot-dip galvanizing of the Concord River Bridge would be a success.
“We think it’s going to make a really big impact. They say it takes a village to raise a child. In this case it took a village to raise a riverwalk, and we’re really excited to get it off the ground.”
